So while both countries seem to have a cordial relationship right now– that could change under the new leadership of President Elect Jimmy Moralez. As
was widely reported Jimmy Moralez made some provocative remarks during his campaign about his plans regarding the Belize – Guatemala territorial
dispute. His tone has changed since taking office, but is Belize prepared for any shift in relations under Moralez? That's what we asked General Jones
today.
Brig. Gen. David Jones - Commander, BDF
"I don't except any changes to occur with our military counterparts. We've had a long standing relationship with our military counterparts but
political directives can change; if politicians decide otherwise then the military will have to follow because the military work under the directives
of their politicians. But the long standing relationship that we've had with the Guatemalan armed forces, I don't expect things to change. If it is
going to change, we're going to discuss what the best way is forward for both forces to work together because we're both professionals and we only
execute our political directives but we try to work together in a professional manner."
Morales will be inaugurated in January.
