Opposition Demands Stern Diplomatic Note
posted (June 17, 2016)
And the PUP wants Foreign Minister Elrington to abandon the diplomatic speak, and take a hardline after the Guatemalan armed forces again stopped a Belize contingent on the Sarstoon.

Hon. John Briceno, PUP Party Leader
"We are demanding from the government that they send a very strong diplomatic note to Guatemala and copied to the Organization of American States (OAS), demanding that the Guatemalan armed forces remain on their side of the Sarstoon River."

Government has said that it is investigating the incident, and, quote "if the report is accurate, the incident would constitute a breach of the spirit of the Confidence Building Measures and must also be rejected as prejudicial to the ongoing diplomatic efforts, including next week's meeting in Washington, to establish a bilateral Cooperation Mechanism for the Sarstoon."

The Guatemalans have told Belize's Foreign Ministry that they attempted to stop the vessel to find out why the media was taking pictures of their naval base.
