Bowers The Boxer Burnt Out In Blaze
posted (November 21, 2016)
For most of the 70s and 80s, Carlton Bowers was a celebrated welterweight boxer, and at one point, he was the Caribbean Junior Welterweight Champion, and even brought home a Bronze medal from the Central American Games in 1977. Bowers, who now sells paletas, lives on Red Bell Lane in Belize City, where on Friday night, his house burned down. We met Bowers at the site of his old home, where he told us about what happened.

"I went out for one of my friends to buy something, because she came to me and she drove to me and said "I heard your house is burning down back there" and then I came, and when I got here everything was already burned. The fire was already out, and I met the firemen, and they questioned me about the size of the house and different things."

"Do you think that this is an accident, or do you know of anybody who would maybe want to burn your house down or anything like that?"

Carlton Bowers - House fire victim
"Well I would say probably an accident because I don't have any, what you call it? I don't have anybody that's against me, you know. There's nobody against me, it's an accidental thing or something like that."

And while Bowers insists that the fire was some sort of accident, he still needs to rebuild. He told us that his neighbors have already offered him some help, and has asked for some assistance from the public as well.

"My next step is to try and build back, just clay the spot and try to build back."

"Do you have any help, is there anyone who can help or assist you in you know building up and restarting?"

Carlton Bowers - House fire victim
"My neighbors said they would give me a little hand and so on. And I give thanks."

"Yeah, well I'd like an assistance from the public who is interested, and say well yeah it's Carlton Bowers, I'll give him a shelter to live in, and like that. But, I got, at the same time, I've got my neighbors that I live around that can push through, and they can do it the way, you know. We'll do it together. But I would give thanks to, you know, somebody can come and full, you know. If I can't meet that, I'm dealing with my neighbors to help me build up back, right."

If anyone is interested in helping Bowers rebuild, he can be contacted at 654-1529.
