SCA Claims Victory In Youth Innovation
posted (May 4, 2017)
Since 2007, the international accounting firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers - has sent about two thousand of its employees to Belize to teach financial literacy and entrepreneurship to Belizean students through an initiative called Peacework.

Yesterday we showed you the Youth Innovation Challenge which presented students with a case challenge to find solutions for an existing local issue, such as crime. We were there when SCA's project called "Make, Manage and Invest" was chosen as the winner from among 11 high schools:

Sheree Clarke, First Place - SCA
"Before we even won, we know that we were winners. Thanks to our mentors. We feel like winners."

Rhea Ryes, First Place - SCA
"We just felt really motivated by our mentors, teachers and our entire school is behind us through this process and basically we all stuck together as a team. There was never once that we doubted ourselves because of all the support we got."

Shenique Logan, First Place - SCA
"The help of our administration and our mentors, we knew that this program would be a success."

First Place - SCA
"We learn financial management along with creating a project that actually makes sense. I mean putting our minds together and actually creating something that can come through is like a win itself. So without winning this is the true win, the knowledge."

First Place - SCA
"Each of us won a tablet and I think we got a printer for the school and each participant got $750. I am going to save all this money for like future use for example like the CXCs that I am going to take instead of putting the burden on my parents, I am going to pay for it with my money."

Sheree Clarke, First Place - SCA
"We made that money and now we are going to invest it."

And while they each got a table and 750 dollars each, it wasn't all about winning, they explained the substance of their project.

First Place - SCA
"We saw that many youth are just trying to look for a way to gain income and they use it by stealing and committing crimes. So we say alright let's give them something to make and make the money. So this program actually thought me how to motivate as our mentors motivated us and gives us confidence. So if we are constantly behind these people we will able to motivate them and we will make a change in this country."

Sheree Clarke, First Place - SCA
"We decided that we will merge the students' talents that they already possess along with technology which they like to use in order for them to create goods and services to provide to the tourists and other people out here in our country and this will help to take these youth off the street."

SECOND Place went to Sadie Vernon High School for their recyclers bicycle club, and third place went to St. John's for project Catalyst.
