Good Samaritan Slain In South
posted (May 16, 2017)
Yesterday, a Guatemalan national was killed on the Coastal Road in Southern Belize. Eduardo Caal died trying to help the victims of a car accident, but unfortunately he did not know that those victims were criminals making a getaway. Our news team went down South to find out what happened, here's Alex Courtenay with the story...

Alex Courtenay reporting
Edwardo Caal was just trying to do the right thing, when he was shot dead yesterday afternoon. Caal, was driving down the Coastal Road on the way to visit his brother, when he happened upon a car totaled on the side of the road. When he stopped to offer his assistance, the crashed vehicle's passengers shot him and made off with his vehicle.

Voice of: a resident
"This vehicle crashed and he stopped and he stop to give assistance to the people and they killed him and they took his vehicle."

Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody - Commander, Dangriga Police
"At about 1pm we received information about a traffic in the White Ridge area on the Coastal Road, Police responded to that information. On arriving at the location we saw a Ford Explorer vehicle involved in the accident - 4 wheel turned up and a Hispanic male person beside the said vehicle. Examination on the body revealed that Mr. Edwardo Caal suffered from one gunshot wound to the forehead."

But that's just part of the story. Police investigations have revealed that the men that shot Caal, were involved in another crime earlier that day.

Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody - Commander, Dangriga Police
"The suspect in this case is also suspect in a robbery at Silk Grass. i must say that we have some very good evidence that will assist us in that robbery at this present monent."

Alex Courtenay, 7News
"And that robbery relates to the vehicle that was crashed correct?"

Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody - Commander, Dangriga Police
"Yes."

Alex Courtenay, 7News
"So the suspects were trying t escape after robbing that vehicle."

According to reports, the crashed vehicle was rented and used to commit the robbery. Since the incident, police have been able to gather key evidence in the case, and already have a few suspects...

Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody - Commander, Dangriga Police
"We also have in our custody a Subaru car that taken away from Mr. Edwardo and was found at about 10 miles away from La Democracia. I must say that vehicle was picked up last night and was taken to the Hattieville Police station and was processed this morning. We don't have any person in custody as yet. We have 4 suspects that we are looking for. We already retrieve several statements that is assisting us in our investigation."

And now Caal's family here in Belize, as well as in Guatemala where he is from, are left in utter disbelief that something like this could happen to a kind man, who was just trying to be a 'Good Samaritan'...

Blanca Noriada - Girlfriend of the deceased
"He was well behaved, he never went out or drank, he only used to stay home. That day he went to the farm to go and see his brother and that is where the incident happened. I don't know why. He was a very calm person, who never interfered with anyone, so I don't know why they did this to him."

"I feel bad. Now that he's gone who will help me. I will need to work harder to maintain my kids. The little money that he gave me used to help me a lot."

Caal was known as a family man, who made frequent trips to visit his family living in Guatemala.
