Territorial Volunteers Go To Sarstoon Island
posted (May 29, 2017)
Today, Will Maheia and the Belize Territorial Volunteers went back to Sarstoon Island - to mark the anniversary of the Guatemalan Armed Forces coming into Belizean Territory and demanding that they move off Belizean soil. So, today the volunteers climbed into three boats and went back to Sarstoon Island. This time, the only caution came from the BDF's Froward operating base who told them to stay on the northern side of the river. And Maheaia did manage to plant his flag on the northern side of the island:...

Will Maheia, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"We can't let this day go unnoticed, because that was the day when for the very first time Guatemala came into Belize territory and basically ordered our armed forces to leave the island, but clearly 1859 treaty show that this island belong to us. It's our island and we have to take this island. We cannot allow it to go away."

"We just pulled up by the military base, they instructed to us that we can't go around. We will listen to the military. We don't want to... but it's our island, we are here today to plant this flag so that Belizeans never forget that this island belong to us and to no one else."

THE Guatemalan Armed Forces boat was present but they never came around the area. Maheia said he is still not happy that they could not go completely around the island which - according to the 1859 treaty is Belizean territory.
