If you've been watching 7News long enough - you'll remember way back in the late 90's when we used to put the Grandmaster Leroy Young on the news every Friday. It was just a loose experiment in television entertainment, and he would throw down a few verses of poetry. We mostly had no idea what we were doing, and he was winging it too - except that the poems he put out in that period achieved a kind of social currency which poetry rarely does. What we mean is, regular folks were reciting his poems in the street, using his expressions in everyday conversations.
It was remarkable, and today as the Grandmaster was honored at the Image Factory with a new retrospective - we went back to the start - I'll let my former anchor colleague Dawn Sampson handle the introduction:…
