10 days ago, all the news was about the 650 million US dollar assistance program that Guatemala had gotten from Taiwan to build a road right up to the Atlantic coast. It was announced by president Jimmy Morales who was reported as saying, quote, "By the grace of God, in a few months, if God helps us, we will officially offer, no longer a highway to the Atlantic but a 4-lane freeway to Puerto Barrios, before 2020".
Well, God may help, but the Taiwanese say they aren't - because the kind of assistance exceeds their foreign affairs budget. Here's how the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize put it today:
