The Blue Was Bullish Up North
posted (March 8, 2018)

We take you now to the north - which is the PUP's stronghold.  We start first with Orange Walk, where the UDP's were trying to pull off a huge upset in John Briceno's hometown.

That's the only town that the PUP won a majority of the seats
in 3 years ago, if the ruling UDP was able to reverse that, it would been a deathblow to Briceño's command of the north.

Our news team was there, and Daniel Ortiz reports:

Early in the morning at the San Francisco polling station, we found the PUP Incumbent, Mayor Kevin Bernard, and his UDP challenger, Phillip De La Fuente , trying to secure as much votes as possible. Both men were projecting confidence for the end result in Orange Walk, however, the incumbent was predicting a landslide.

Phillip De La Fuente - Mayoral Candidate, UDP
"Our people are out there preparing our people to come out because we know that is what everybody know elections are won on election day. So we are making sure we bring out our people."

Kevin Bernard - Incumbent, PUP
"I've been up and down already, moving around getting my people just as our campaigners are doing, we have to go out as well and bring our some people so for us to secure a victory we have to make sure we can bring out every single voter, our voters that will support us but today is a good day. Today will be a very good day and by the time the ending is over you can call me mayor after that."

Daniel Ortiz
"Do you feel like the underdog?"

Phillip De La Fuente
"We are the underdog. We're not the incumbents, we're trying to get in there."

Daniel Ortiz
"Do you feel any kind of additional pressure as the incumbent? The guy on the next side is trying to steal your job."

Kevin Bernard
"I don't feel any pressure at all, he had that job and did nothing. At the end of the day we will continue to work."

Hon. John Briceño - Leader of the Opposition
"Here in Orange Walk we believe that Kevin as mayor has delivered for the people or Orange Walk Town along with his team."

So, the very same way that Mayor Bernard had his party Leader in his corner, lending his influence as the elected parliamentarian, the UDP Mayoral Aspirant had Orange Walk East Area Rep., Elodio Aragon Jr., on his side.

Very early in the election, it was predicted that Orange Walk East, Aragon's constituency, would become the battleground for the Orange Walk Municipal Elections.

Hon. Elodio Aragon Jr. - UDP Area Rep., Orange Walk East
"Louisiana Government School is the only polling station for our voters in the east so we're going to find 5,400 voters coming out today. That's the total number of registered voters we have, I estimate we will have an upwards of over 70% coming out to vote today. The UDP executive in Orange Walk have been working together to ensure that we bring about that victory and I'm confident that will be and all we're asking is come out, put it on the red and let us make a difference for Orange Walk."

We found the other candidates in the polling area around the Louisiana Government School. That's where the Orange Walk East voters would cast their ballots, and both sides were jostling, in a peaceful manner, for as many supporters as they could get.

Jose Antonio Cocom - UDP Councillor Candidate
"The Orange Walk East machine is breathing fire right now, we're bringing out the masses. The people are grass roots people; we've picked the campaigners that we know are the ones that keep in touch with the people every single day. So we know we are being as efficient and effective as we can be. We have a great set of leaders, great set of street captains, zone leaders that know their people and they know the ones that will support us and the ones that are independent thinkers that are on the fence it's our jobs to bring them over as well. So here in Orange Walk East the UDP 7 is on fire right now. We are bringing out the masses; we are guaranteeing ourselves that this will be our time."

Josue Carballo - Incumbent, PUP Councillor Candidate
"We always election day is a harvesting day, you are harvesting the fruits we have been planting all this while and nurturing so we did our tour campaign, we visited our list over and over. We went to visit voters who did not come out to vote at the last election encouraging them to come out, let them understand that they should not allow anyone else to make the choice for them."

Armando Usher - UDP Councillor Candidate
"I've been from 53, 54, 56 year around, going around and asking everyone for that support. This morning it was slow but this is the time it is starting to get busy and people start coming out and we need to get them to go vote for us you know."

Ajasha "Jay" Cantun - UDP Councillor Candidate
"I am proud to say I have visited all the poling areas more than once. I have been around and I have been talking to people and people are very positive when it comes to the UDP 7. I think they are more receptive to the team because we are fresh faces in this and I think they want to see fresh faces up there."

And at the La Inmaculada RC School,, we found the two sides trying to greet the last minute voters. Both sides were satisfied that they had done their best to win the election.

Daniel Ortiz
"How do you feel about your chances personally and then your party's chances because you guys are the underdogs."

Evan Williams - UDP Councillor Candidate
"The way how the people talk they make me feel like I will top the polls but nevertheless the UDP 7 I think we have a really good chance."

Daniel Ortiz
"Watching the clock run down, what's the next step for you? Will you be in there watching from the sideline as the counting takes place?"

Haresh Vaswani - PUP Councillor Candidate
"I will be right here at 6 o'clock, right here at La Inmaculada where the counting will be happening and be right out there waiting for that poll to finish and let's see what happens tonight. I'm confident though it's going to be our side."

After the counting, the PUP beat the UDP just about two to one.

The Incumbent, Mayor Kevin Bernard, handily defeated his opponent, Orlando de La Fuenta, getting twice as many votes. Bernard got 5,260 votes, while de La Fuente got 2,593 votes.
