UDP Lost Narrowly in Corozal
posted (March 8, 2018)

Our news team was also in Corozal Town where both major mass parties put together teams made up almost all new candidates. The ruling UDP was trying its best to hold on to Corozal after its 4 term mayor moved on.

Here's what our news team found in that northernmost town:

Up in Corozal Town, the two mass parties were clamoring for the municipality as best as they could. Both sides featured new faces in politics.

The PUP was hoping to seize on the opportunity of four term Mayor Hilberto Campos's exit from municipal politics. While the UDP was hoping that a long-time town council employee would make a seamless transition to the Mayoral office.

Both sides were predicting that they would be victorious.

Rigo Vellos - PUP Mayoral Candidate
"Our campaign has been so positive, we have been opening the people's eyes in Corozal for the 8 months that we have been doing our campaigning and I'm sure also that people in Corozal have noticed we are the party who has been doing all the work without even being in power. So I am sure they can see the possibilities when we are in power. Now it's been 8 long months and a lot of people opened their doors to us and I thank them for that and I want to ask them to take the opportunity now and use the power that they have in their hands and make the change now. This is the right time they have been waiting for 12 years. I've been in two polling stations so far and I am confident that I can tell that the majority have been the PUP people coming out and that's the message we want to send all over the country that the PUP, our people they are very ready for a change now. "

Richard Quan - UDP Mayoral Candidate
"Well, I am being honest with you everybody know who Richard Quan is. I born right here, I grew right here and I have never come out from Corozal. My opponent 25 years he missing so it was very easy for me because everybody know who Richard Quan is. They say boy Richard you are a humble person, you don't watch colors, you don't watch face and I embrace everybody. So it was a very smooth, no bumpy ride, smoothest campaign I ever deal with because my father helped me a lot because he was a mayor for Corozal so I had a smooth paved road to go through."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir are you in anyway kind of apprehensive that Corozal Town could swing the other way?"

Richard Quan
"I'll be honest with you I don't see any fraction of that could swing. Hilberto has done a good job here. It's true it's a big job and it's a big shoe to fill but I'll tell you something I have big feet and I come with clean hands and clean heart."

Shamir Alpuche - PUP Councillor Candidate
"They know the people right now everything is not right so they will come out with a heart of change and the blue wave is going to hit Corozal, I can tell you that."

Melhem Williams - UDP Councillor Candidate
"We're working hard and we got to most of our people. Some we couldn't get to and the town is getting really large, we noticed it. We looked around and we saw things that we need to get change, somethings that have to improve and we'll be working with them."

Dilan Cassanova - PUP Councillor Candidate
"It's my first time running as a candidate but I have been in politics, grew up in politics. I have been there with my t-shirt from small campaigning with my parents, my grandmother and I took the challenge this year to represent my young people. I'm more than assured that we will be victorious today."

Nonita Ramirez - UDP Councillor Candidate
"I'm running for the UDP town council and this would be my 3rd round."

Daniel Ortiz
"When you said 3rd round, what do you mean 3rd round?"

Nonita Ramirez
"I have been elected since 2006 to 2012. I took a break and now I'm back again to support my people."

We saw UDP Parliamentarians doing their part to try and sell the transition from Hilberto Campos and Richard Quan for Mayor. They were super confident, or in this case, over-confident that Corozal would return the UDP to Municipal Government for a 5th consecutive term.

Hon. Hugo Patt - Area Rep., Corozal North
"If you look at the numbers of Hilberto Campus, he has not been there for one or two terms. He's a seasoned man and in politics the work reflects the voice of the people and if you would realize that he's been there for 4 to 5 terms, that in itself speaks. The man was going his work and so for us it's just a matter of continuing what has been done and of course improve on what we've been doing."

Daniel Ortiz
"How confident are you that Mr. Richard Quan bring things home here in Corozal?"

Hon. Pablo Marin - Area Rep., Corozal Bay
"Well because we have work, we have been working constantly so I know that the people will continue to vote for us. I can brag about it that we have turn the Corozal town from a blue town to a UDP town and it's not only a UDP town but the people are voting right now because we are working."

Hon. Hugo Patt
"This is one big UDP family and so for us it's a transition. Hilberto has moved on to other areas and in politics we can't stay for long, it's not a career we are going to take for our entire lives and so Richard Quan is a seasoned man, he is man that is known to the people. He is a son of Corozal and we feel very confident with Richard."

The Elections and Boundaries Department has not released the official stats for the Corozal as yet, but political insiders have shown us notes which say that the race between the UDP and the PUP was very close.

At the end, the PUP edged out the UDP getting, 20,240 votes, to their 18,068, a difference, just over 2,000 votes.

In the mayoral race itself, PUP's Rigo Vellos beat the UDP's Richard by 99 votes.
