UDP’s “Boots” is Happy That PUP Won
posted (March 9, 2018)
And one politician who has no plans to turn anything around is Anthony Boots Martinez. He says he's retiring after Wednesday's disappointing outcome in his division. He failed to deliver in his Port Loyola division and that was a big part of the UDP's consequential loss in its home base of Belize City. But today we saw him singing at the House of Representatives and being chummy with John Briceno.

He told us he is happy at the outcome:...

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Mr. Martinez, a very disappointing outcome for you in Port Loyola."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Port Loyola Area Rep.
"One thing I could say it's a joyous day for me."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Why is that?"

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Port Loyola Area Rep.
"The people have spoken and I respect the decision of the people. Now they can go and get the cement houses. Now they can get the thousands of jobs. Now they can - streets no vote and so. I am happy for the people."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"It sound like you is judging people for voting against you."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"No man, it is an enjoyable feeling. See I am laughing. Normally people usually say man you demeanor, you come confrontational. It's a joyous day."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Do you accept that they rejected you? It's you who put your... remember I told you, when you get involved its 48%. When you never got involved in the last city council it was 68%."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"Put it this way, I am 4 times representative at Port Loyola presently - FOUR consecutive. I will retire as a champion - Boots Martinez on the ballot will retire as a champion. So they cannot reject me. Who step up now, it's a matter of the party. But I said it from the election night that I am retired politician going into retirement."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"But you won't go for a by-election?"

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"Well that is another case and that is a decision that I need to make."

Reporter
"Minister what was wrong in your machinery to help out the UDP slate?"

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"Nothing went wrong. I think the people fall for the thousands of jobs and the cement houses. I am happy for them and I am happy that I am getting a little help, because Candice Pitts is from Port Loyola and so probably she can open her office there and service the people of Port Loyola - give me a little hand. The people they believe and it is the truth and I hope and wish them well. I felt like yesterday the streets were to start. The thousands of jobs was already there. To tell the truth I am happy for them."

Reporter
"They are not sworn in yet."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"I didn't know. I had wish that they were sworn in from the night."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"You are happy for the people, the people sent you a message. I am saying did you get the message?"

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"They haven't sent me any. I am saying, put it this way, understand good what I am saying and you all can't trip me up - I am the 4 term representative of Port Loyola. I am giving this interview in front, inside the national assembly of which I rightfully belong - 4 time representative."

Reporter
"You might leave before your term is up."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"How will I abandoned? You don't see where I am? I am at work."

Martinez says he will likely retire when his boss, the Prime Minister does.
