Torres Talked About An Upset
posted (March 9, 2018)
And while the PUP won handily in Musa's area, despite the poor turnout - we can't say that the third party or independent voters had any luck whatsoever.

Across the country - only two third party candidates were able to get even 1% of the vote. That's in PG where Ronald "Cucu" Maheia and Linston "Blues" McKenzie did it.

In Belize City Ernesto Torres fared the worst of all the independent candidates. He only got 240 votes or point 1 (.1) percent of the total.

He's seen that kind of outcome, or close to it before - but undeterred, he made his third run for mayor on Wednesday.

That's why on election day we made sure to speak to him at his office on the corner of Princess Margaret and University Drive. He told us that there was no doubt in his mind that this election was his time to shine.

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"How are you feeling going into this election? The competition is very tight with the UDP, PUP and other independent candidates?"

Ernesto Torres, Mayoral Candidate
"I don't know what you all mean by tight. People are giving me kudos on the street. People are assuring me that they will vote for me and they said they would vote five red and five blue. You are hearing all kinds of stories, so I don't know what they mean by tight."

Sahar Vasquez
"Are you a veteran in this game right?"

Ernesto Torres
"Well of course."

Sahar Vasquez
"You have been running for a long time and you have not won."

Ernesto Torres
"I have been looking for a long time."

Sahar Vasquez
"What do you think to attribute to your losses? What do you think you maybe did not do as well?"

Ernesto Torres
"All along people were of the feeling that it is not possible in country Belize. The Nations State to vote for independent party candidates. We had been accustomed to red, blue, red, blue and people notice we are going down the drain more and more. We are going down in law and order and general discipline. However, I believe people think it is best that we come to a real change."

Sahar Vasquez
"So if you were to win and other councillors get in do you think that they would want to work with you?"

Ernesto Torres
"Well it is not with me, they have to work according to law."

Sahar Vasquez
"But do you think they would be willing to cooperate with you?"

Ernesto Torres
"But of course. I won't scare them. I am a loving person."

Sahar Vasquez
"Now sir, if you do lose, will this be your last time running?"

Ernesto Torres
"No, no, no. I will not answer that question. I will not lose. I am sorry but I will not lose in my mind."

Tune in on Tuesday when we'll have our usual full statistical review of the election numbers and trends.
