Peace and Reconciliation, A Dialogue
posted (March 14, 2018)
And a community activist has also decided to take direct action in response to the spate of violence against children.

Cynthia Ellis Topsey has launched the Belize Movement For Peace and Reconciliation. She held a press conference today to say she wants to start an outreach to synthesize efforts and open a dialogue. Here's more from the event at the UWI open campus:

Cynthia Ellis-Topsey, Community Acitvist
"This nation is grieving for the deaths of these children and these men and these boys and these girls and therefore we declare a time of mourning and grieving. Nothing is wrong with that in this time of women's month. We are recalling and seeing the cries and the blood that is streaming on the streets and we can't be quiet anymore. Enough is enough. So, the call to action is a dialogue of every individual, every organization, and every group that is interested in going through a process of reconciliation. I'm not afraid to challenge the media to stop glorifying crime and violence. We want to encourage you to join with us to describe another Belize, a Belize where we can constructively learn to work along with one another. The first task is to bring everybody to listen to what it is that they are doing and to make a declaration to come together. So, in a hundred days we are making ourselves responsible to report back to the nation as to what it is we have done. Have no fear, have courage, have boldness. The outcome of a hundred days is not about fixing anything in a 100 days. The intention is to create a space for dialogue where silence has existed for too long; that is important. So, I don't have any illusion about fixing anything because that is not my job. I won't be so arrogant to say that I know what the outcome will be because that is not my responsibility. I trust and honor and respect every person that together we can be able to, including you sir, to come up with some way in which we can break this cycle."

Ellis Topsey says she will report back in 100 days which is June 22nd. Those interested in participating can call her at 6610731.
