Changing GOB Store Orders: More Efficiency or Less Oversight?

Earlier in the news, we showed you the fiery debate in the Senate over the loan motions and the sovereign guarantee for BTL.

Well, we still have a little more for you from that Senate Meeting. We take you now to the portion of the debate over an amendment to Stores Orders Regulations of 2017. The Government wants to allow accounting officers to be able to spend money from the public purse all the way up to $50,000 for items they need to use to run their ministry.

From the Government's perspective, this amendment gives a bit more autonomy to these accounting officers, so that they don't have to take all purchase orders to the Financial Secretary. It's supposed to be a welcomed relief for the Fin Sec, but today, the Opposition and some of the social partner senators were not buying it.

They see it as a relaxing financial oversight, which the Government senators disagreed with. Here's what a few of the senators had to say on the topic:
