Talking About The Teakettle Tête-à-Tête
posted (March 15, 2018)

We also asked about yesterday's meeting of the Belize-Guatemala Joint Commission - which we've dubbed the "Teakettle tête-à-tête."

Ambassador De La Roche, and his Belizean counterpart, Alexis Rosado headed the meeting along with the OAS representative, Katalina Montana.

The topic of discussion was the 13 bilateral agreements signed between the two countries back in 2014 on the Placencia Peninsula.

Ambassador De La Roche told us this morning that both countries chose several of the agreements which they each wanted to focus on:

H.E. Georges de la Roche Du Ronzet - Guatemalan Ambassador to Belize
"We met just outside your capital, just outside Belmopan at a place called Dream Valley which is about 10 minutes out of Belmopan, a beautiful place and it was a very good setting to have this reactivation of the joint commission which had not met in over a year, so it was a very positive event where we were able to with my counterpart with Ambassador Alexis Rosado, were able to in a preliminary manner go over the more than 14 bilateral agreements Guatemala has with Belize and pinpoint and highlight some that Guatemala and Belize would like to see pushed forward and brought to the forefront so it was very positive. I'm very happy, the OAS that was there, the mediators they were there."

Daniel Ortiz
"How far along are the 2 countries in the bilateral agreements?"

H.E. Georges de la Roche Du Ronzet
"Very ambitious because I think at the time we have had a very active foreign ministry, as have you, so these 13, 14, 15 some would say bilateral agreements signed in Placencia in 2014 really are quite positive. I would say 75% of them are already active and enforced officially, others still need to be finalized but then the tricky part is implementation. Belize said for example these are the 2 that we want to focus with a future view to these 3 and Guatemala say okay we want to focus on these 2 with a future view to these 3 to concentrate on."

Tomorrow's we'll show you what the Ambassador had to say about their ICJ campaign, and possible outcomes at the ICJ, should the territorial dispute actually end up there.
