New Commander’s First Priority
posted (March 16, 2018)
Now Gillett will meet with his south side officers on Monday morning to make it official. And Gillett already has his things to do list prepared. He is eager to get started. He gave us a specific breakdown of what his first order of business will be as the new Southside commander.

Sr. Supt Howell Gillet, Southside Commander
"I want to quickly go house to house especially to start with the affected areas in Belize City in the Southside of Belize City. And the police can't do it on their own, the police will never be able to solve crime on its own so we have to enlist their support."

"Another thing that readily comes to mind is that there is too much available ammunition on the street and maybe even available guns so we will have to be going after those who have the guns and ammunition so that the public..it saddens me when I came to Belize a few nights ago just after 6:00 pm the entire place is closed down. So to help with the economic condition, to help the economy to boom we have to have these people, they have a right to open at night but we have to do better as a police to offer protection to them during their opening hours."

"Another thing that I want to stop if not immediately then shortly thereafter is the perception of police abuse, police corruption those have to go away if the public is to trust us."

As we told you, an official meeting will be held on Monday morning with the officers. This evening, Senior Superintendent Vidal sent a text to a police chat group, saying, quote "It was a pleasure and an exciting experience in the Southside that could not have come without the cynicism from those within the community….I wish the new Commander and his team all the best as we collectively endeavor to forge our way in combating the scourge of crime in the city and across the country….hopefully we can see true peace in the city and across the country. Good luck to all. Jah bless."
