Jealousy Led Killer To Shoot Denroy
posted (March 19, 2018)
And so, while all the murders that caused a public alarm this weekend were vendetta's or gang based, the next one we'll tell you about was likely motivated by jealousy.

On Saturday night at around 8:00, 31-year-old Denroy Alvarez was outside of his girlfriend's house at the corner of Nargusta and Hondo Streets, when a gunman walked up and shot him to death.

Now, Alvarez was a working man - but police believe his new girlfriend's ex was jealous to the point of murder. Sahar Vasquez has more.

Sahar Vasquez reporting
After a long day, Simeon Alvarez Sr. left his work in Belize City and retired to his home in Mahogany Heights. But as he was settling in, he got devastating news. His 31-year-old son Denroy had been murdered. He rushed down to Belize City and saw an image that he won't ever be able to get out of his head.

"I came to Belize City and at the KHMH I saw the lifeless body of my son Denroy after seeing him I was also admitted because of hypertension."

"I could not believe that Denroy would have gone so easily. He is one of my children that is always there even if I don't call him, he would still call me and see if I am ok."

Now his son is gone forever. Police were puzzled as to why Alvarez was killed but their investigation revealed that it may have been because of one man's deep-seated jealousy.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, OC-CIB Belize City
"So far we have interviewed several persons and the information that we are gathering at this moment shows that it can be a possible jealousy between the ex-husband and now deceased boyfriend."

Alvarez had just left the KHMH when he was killed outside his girlfriend's house, but the 31-year-old had been receiving threats for a while. His brother knew about it but he never thought those threats would materialize into his closest siblings unexpected end a few months later.

"Yes he did had a little jealousy with the young boy, but the young man was nobody serious who I believe would come and kill my brother. I thought they would have done a little hand fight, than to carry this to a murder. I can't really say that is one of the reasons, but we are just putting everything together and at the end of the day we are not worrying about it. He is dead, so we just have to bury him."

Simeon says Denroy was the life of the party. He had the unique ability to keep a smile on the faces of those around him with his never-ending humour.

"Friendly, fun, guy. He doesn't give any trouble. Even the gun man that killed him, could have just walk away from Denroy, because as you look at Denroy, you look at a joke. Nobody shouldn't have chance him out of his life."

And for his dad his heart broke the second he got that life-changing phone call. But he will always remember his precious son as the leader of their family clan who created many unforgettable memories.

Simeon Alvarez Sr., Father of Deceased
"Denroy will never be forgotten. Out of all the children that I have, Denroy is one of the outstanding ones that are always there. For any occasion I have Denroy was the leader followed by his siblings with him coming to Mahogany Heights to have fun with their dad."

His son may not be here physically but Alvarez still sees him grinning ear to ear.

"To me, he is still around. I am seeing him right now as we speak. I am seeing him. It was a shock to me."

Alvarez leaves behind five young children. He worked as a garbage truck driver for the Belize City Council. He becomes the fourth city council employee to have been murdered in 5 weeks.

Police have not been able to track down the ex-boyfriend who is a suspect. They say he does not live in the city.
