Sex Education For The Aging
posted (March 21, 2018)
Usually, when you hear the words Sex Education you think about young people learning all about those birds and bees, but today we went to a session about Sexual health and aging where young people were not in the audience.

Several elderly women came together to take a new lesson in sex education. We stopped in and found out what they learnt and why it is so important.

Ixchell Pott, National Council and Ageing Executive Director
"It is a comprehensive one-day session where we talk to women about the changes their body experiences but also how to engage in sexual activity in a safe and healthy way."

"We are talking about nutrition, we are talking about overall health. Even though we are talking about sexual health, we are also talking about breast exams and nutritional health. We are talking about taking care of yourself as you grow older as the woman."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"How important is this for them?"

Ixchell Pott, National Council and Ageing Executive Director
"Well if you look at the development of sexual health and sexual education you will find that this particular age group is absent from the conversation. When the large portion of the population began to get the education about sexual health they were not included for several reasons. Different generations, the composition of the society at the time. What we have seen is that as they become older there is a greater risk for them to engage in risky behavior. An older woman that has already passed menopause won't think about safe sex because safe sex is marketed at preventing pregnancy and if you can't get pregnant what is the point. It is really looking at how these women can continue to be women in a very healthy and safe environment."

This is the second annual workshop that the National Council has held for women. They plan to keep doing it yearly and expand their reach.
