A Rare Bail For Murder
posted (March 23, 2018)
Supreme Court bail for accused murders is one of the rarest things offered to defendants, but today, Justice Denis Hanomansingh did so for 27 year-old Aaron Bailey. He has been on remanded since October 2013, awaiting trial for the murder of 28 year-old Gary Pratt.

He was represented by attorney Leeroy Banner who submitted to the court that his client has been in custody for over 4 years, which amounts to an abuse of process. Crown Counsel Sherigne Rodriguez objected to the grant of bail, but she did have to concede that Bailey has been in jail for a long time.

After consideration, Justice Hanomansingh granted him bail with several conditions. He must report to the Raccoon Street Police Station every Monday and Friday, and he must report to the Supreme Court before Justice Marilyn Williams on April 11, and all adjourned dates of his case. He must be inside his home between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., and he also has to surrender his travel documents to the court. He is also cannot interfere with the witnesses for the prosecution. It's an important precedent, since many alleged murderers are on remand for four to five years.

Pratt was shot and killed on October 4, 2013 in a yard on Antelope Street. It is believed that Pratt, who was originally from Punta Gorda, was killed due to mistaken identity.
