KHMH - Toughest Job In Healthcare
posted (March 23, 2018)
Tonight, the KHMH is going into its second week in crisis mode. The hospital's roof is caving in; 120 support posts have been installed to hold up the main beam, and 50% of the hospital is closed off.

It's the last, very tough stand for the outgoing CEO Dr. Adrian Coye. He's a highly specialized cardio-thoracic surgeon by training, but he pursued the CEO's post in the hopes of advancing healthcare in Belize. Three and a half years later, he's resigning what he calls the toughest job in healthcare. He spoke to Jules Vasquez about it earlier this week:...

"These are all challenges and I have no regrets for the time spent in the position and i will do maximally what i can do until the very end."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Is this the hardest job in healthcare?"

Dr. Adrian Coye, Stepping Down as CEO in May, '18
"I think so. By far. There is no doubt about it. Hospital medicine and the responsibility for - you know - more than 600 staff that we have and then in the vision for the country, of course in the presence of always, it would always appear that we have less than enough resources for all the ideas that we have because we see a different Karl Huesner than maybe what the public sees. And we have been working towards that - we have bene investing, you know? We've bought one of the biggest selections of instruments in the last year and a bit... as part of retooling the institution. We have been investing in critical areas in such a way because we see that we have to raise our game. And, the fact remains that we are still outperforming as an institution - anybody who wants to say otherwise it's for them to say. But we believe that the work we do is immeasurable in value."

Coye demits office in May.
