Sol. Gen. Wants Business Senator To Retract His Harsh Words
posted (March 29, 2018)
That huge raft of legislation comes out of the Attorney General's ministry - but at Tuesday's Senate meeting, the business Senator Mark Lizarraga openly questioned the function and productivity of the AG's Ministry. He suggested that their allocation in the budget was not justified, and AG Michael Peyrefitte took offense and asserted that he owes the employees of this ministry an apology for dismissing their hard work.

Well, the Sol Gen, whose office falls under the Attorney General's Ministry, agrees with his boss. Here's how he explained why he wants the Senator to recant those comments:

Nigel Hawke - Solicitor General
"I think it is incumbent on what was said because it is my respectful view that we expect when members go to the house, at least whatever is said must be said in a very fair and respectable manner. I thought what was pronounced by, if I say on behalf of the business community that it seems as though the attorney general's ministry was sitting there doing nothing and I utterly reject that position and I say it is unfair to the technical people who work in that ministry and also all the support staff, because we have done a lot as you see. You see me coming to court in all these different matters, you have the drafting section who is doing a number of pieces of legislation, then you have the technical staff that support. So in all the circumstances it is my respectful view on what was said during a senate debate, but it think it should be recanted, because a wrong message could be sent to members of the public that here you have a government department and is sitting there doing nothing, when in fact we have these young attorneys who are fighting day and day in and out for and on behalf of the state and on behalf of tax payers who pay us. So I think the statement was most unfortunate and I think it is incumbent of me to respond to say we find it as most unfair and we hope that the statement would be retracted and recanted."
