Corozal Murder Looks Drug/Cartel Related
posted (April 3, 2018)
And from Western Belize, we take you now to the north for a chilling murder which happened in the Corozal Village of Louisville.

On Easter Sunday afternoon at around 2:00, Corozal police found 42 year-old Eleazar Chan's body in a cane field just outside the neighboring San Pedro Village. It was wrapped in a hammock, and several garbage bags, which was placed - oddly - on a sofa. An on-site post-mortem has revealed that Chan died of blunt force trauma to the face.

His killing has his neighbors scared to talk openly about what they saw, but reports to 7News are that 3 men were spotted going into his Louisville house, seen here in the footage. After an amount of time, these same persons were then seen bringing out a sofa, which they placed on a vehicle, and drove off. No one realized that this same sofa was what hid Chan's body.

There is strong suspicion that Chan's murder is drug related, and today, we tried to question police about it at their bi-weekly press conference. Here's how that conversation went:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"Corozal police was called to the San Pedro Village area in the Corozal District on Sunday April 1, sometime around 1p.m. where somewhere about half a mile west of San Pedro village, a red in color sofa chair was found between two cane fields. Upon inspection of the sofa, police discovered a human corpse encased within the sofa. Upon opening the sofa, the body of Eleazar Chan a forty-two-year-old broker of Louisville Village was found wrapped in a hammock, thereafter in black plastic garbage bags. It was found in an advanced state of decomposition. An on scene postmortem was conducted where the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the face and also asphyxia due to blood content. Police has since commence an intensive investigation where 3 person are detained in relation to this matter. We are also seeking the public's assistance in obtaining any information that might be helpful to this investigation."

Reporter
"Are you able to say if police suspect a possible drug connection to this gentleman's murder?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"So far, there is no indication of that. But as I mentioned the investigation is in its early stages and all angles will be looked into."

Reporter
"There is also information reaching to us as well that other person may be indicating that at least one of the personalities that he was in the company of maybe be connected to cartel. Can you share any information to confirm or deny?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"None at this point in time."

Police say that his wife reported him missing on Saturday, March 31, the day before he was found dead. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, he was buried shortly after the post-mortem examination.

We note that apart from being laid out on a sofa - there was a distinctive X - made out from sheets of plastic pinned to the side of the cane road where he was found.

Chan, a former customs broker, leaves behind 3 children.
