KHMH - When Will Normalcy Resume?
posted (April 5, 2018)

As we told you on Tuesday, things are slowly starting to normalize at the KHMH. The clinics have re-opened - and the hospital admissions office is scheduling consultations for those patients who had pending appointments. But a lot still needs to be done to restore all services and the final report from a team of Mexican engineers will assist in moving forward. Today Health CEO. Dr. Ramon Figueroa gave us an update on the engineer's assessment and what the Ministry of Health is doing to help the KHMH.

Dr. Ramon Figueroa - CEO, Ministry of Health
"The Mexicans did come and they promised to submit a complete report. We got a preliminary feedback on what they thought was being done there and I have been told today the report should be coming in either today or tomorrow. To be frank with you with the feedback that I've gotten there is nothing different from what was already, I think what our Belizean engineers did an excellent job, an excellent assessment, I don't think there was anything that was wrong with that assessment we just wanted an outside opinion and a more complete and comprehensive assessment. From what we gathered the remedial actions that were taken was the proper one. We are also waiting to see what would be the kind of interventions that we need to make although we already had a report from local engineering what sort of actions need to be taken to repair the structural damage so. I think KHMH is already putting together the documents necessary so that we can put it out to bid."

"And what's the situation right now? Have you have guys restored or has the KHMH restored any services so far?"

Dr. Ramon Figueroa
"Yes I understand - actually we just came out of a meeting because we're trying to see how ministry of health and central regional can assist in terms of taking some of the load off KHMH but I understand that some of the out patience services are coming on stream now. As I said the last time, it is going to be a gradual process but little by little KHMH is going to come back to almost full service delivery."

Figueroa says that the Ministry of Health along with the Central Health Region will try and ease the weekend load at the KHMH – meaning only emergency cases will be directed to the KHMH. At this point, Figueroa says there are still only 2 operating theaters and imaging services are also limited.
