And while Mose Hyde just getting his feet wet in the trade union thing - his brother in law - Mayor Bernard Wagner is learning about the rigors and scrutiny of public life.
On Friday he admitted to us that he writes checks on the council's account to himself to distribute as social assistance. He admitted it was irregular but said he personally accounts for the funds. When we challenged him on that he says the holy Bible is his guide in public life.
Not surprisingly, the UDP takes no consolation in that. The party sent out a release today calling that corruption and, saying, quote, "The UDP condemns this corrupt practice in the strongest possible terms and reminds the Mayor that the Belize City Council already has a budget and transparent procedures for the issuance of social assistance funds, so there is absolutely no need for him to write cheques to himself. His justification was unsatisfactory, and his actions, illegal."
The party says it is, quote, "consulting its attorneys for legal advice, as we believe that this gross display of unapologetic misappropriation is utterly worrisome." End quote.
