AB VS. BT: PUP Paper Offers No Defence To Libel Allegation
posted (April 10, 2018)
And keeping it at the court, for several weeks now, we've been seeing a law suit on the daily list of cases at the Supreme Court that the Prime Minister's son, Anwar Barrow, was suing the Belize Times News and its editor, Mike Rudon.

Well, we've done some checking today, and we found out that Barrow brought a libel suit against them for 2 articles published in their paper dated November 19th, 2017. Both of them come from the "If Dah Noh So" section of the paper. They both allege without proof that Barrow's private, personal and political interests benefitted from arrangements with BTL, back when he was CEO of the company.

Well, Barrow's attorney, Vanessa Retreage, wrote to the Times telling them that the articles are plainly untrue and defamatory and demanded a retraction, an apology and a settlement offer for damages. The Times gave no response, and so their attorney proceeded in court against them. The newspaper offered no legal representation against the suit, and so a default judgment was entered against them.

Being thorough, Retreage went back before Justice Shona Griffith asking the judge to consider the terms of default judgment so as to ensure that an order be given that the Belize Times must be made to take down the articles off their website and their Facebook page.

We attempted to reach Mike Rudon for comment, but we were unable to.
