Cops Don’t Know Much About Human Smuggling Bust
posted (April 12, 2018)

On last night's news, we told you how the Immigration Department and the Anti-Trafficking in Person Council busted a human smuggling operation in the San Ignacio area.

On Tuesday night, at around 9:00, immigration officers pulled over a van near Clarissa Falls, and they found a Belizean driver with 15 Hondurans inside. Among the Hondurans, there were 7 adults and 8 children who entered Belize illegally through the Benque Viejo border. They had not been processed or stamped at that crossing, and they were allegedly being smuggled to the Northern Border, and from there, unto the USA.

Today, we tried to get a bit more details out of the police spokesperson at the bi-weekly press conference, but he told us that this is in the jurisdiction of the Immigration Department:

Wilfredo Ferrufino - Inspector, CIB
"I don't have any details, what I know is that indeed there was a joint operation conducted by immigration and police which resulted in the detention of several females. That matter is being dealt with by immigration department, the police has no information that we can give at this time."

No criminal charges have been announced for the Hondurans, or the Belizean driver.
