Civic Has Soft Opening For High Schoolers
posted (April 17, 2018)
Today, Belize City High Schoolers were the audience and participants in the first sporting activity hosted at the Belize Civic Center.

The first and second place finishers in the male and female division for this year's Belize City basketball tournament faced off in a friendly match while their schools cheered them on and enjoyed all the new facility had to offer. Sports Minister Patrick Faber said that the stadium is starting on the right foot with the young people utilizing the facility.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Sports
"We wanted to do 2 things; firstly, to send the signal as early as possible that we will be putting into action exactly what we've been saying all along that the civic center is not just a big building that looks good and not serve the people and so this is the first demonstration of that. As I've announced as well we will also be opening the civic up for the teachers on teacher's day when that comes up next month. So as we've been saying this is a facility that will be used for by everybody and we are starting on the right foot with the young people, our secondary schools on this occasion."

"As the minister of sports, I notice that you are also handing out awards as well. Can you speak to that?"

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Sports
"The awards are given to the 4 teams that are participating today and what we have are the male and female champions and sub-champions from the central region of the secondary schools basketball competition that has actually closed and so the awards were not for winning, it is for participating in today's event."

The event was hosted by BIL, APEX, The National Sports Council, and the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture. Faber says the Civic's official opening will be on April 30th.
