City Keys to Caribbean Credit Unionists
posted (April 19, 2018)

Earlier in the news, we showed you our interviews with Opposition Leader John Briceño and Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner. Those happened at an event where the City Council was playing host the leadership of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions.

The Belize Credit Union movement is also a part of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions, and today, the new Belize City Council warmly welcomed them to Belize City. Mayor Wagner gifted the President of the Confederation with the keys to the City, and the press was invited to attend the ceremony.

Here's what the speakers had to say about City Hall's attempt to deepen the relationship between the confederation, and the local credit unions:

Bernard Wagner - Belize City Mayor
"The credit union movement has always been a big part of the whole Belizean experience. It has always been there to assist the common man right and we felt as a council that campaigned on insuring that we looked out for the business of the people that felt that what better way to show that we are all about the people by hosting the president of the confederation of credit unions here at city hall. We have many credit unions here in the city and the country, they will continue to do their business, we want to continue to nurture the relationship that we have with the credit union confederation."

Hon. John Briceño - Leader of the Opposition
"When my brother and I got our from University and we were trying to open a business, we went to Scotiabank, we went to Belize Bank and they told us well you have a good plan but we can't trust you, you just got out from school, you're too young to borrow. So I went to my mother and she said well let's go to the credit union. The credit union took a risk and loaned us our first business loan to us to start our business way back."

Hally Hynes - President, CCCU
"I'm indeed honored to receive the keys to the city of Belize on behalf of the Caribbean confederation of credit unions. Let me first of all state that the Belize movement has been a pillar of encouragement for the entire Caribbean movement. It will me remiss of me if I didn't use the opportunity to recognize we call her Aunty Jane, who 100 years old and still going in the credit union movement."

President Hally Haynes also gifted Mayor Wagner with the confederation's token of appreciation.
