50 year-old Critical After Puzzling Accident
posted (April 23, 2018)
So, while Orange Walk cops have been quick to bring charges for that accident, there appears to be some confusion in the case of 50 year-old Gerardo Mendoza who is in a critical condition tonight.

We've spoken to his family via telephone and they told us that he was knocked down on Friday night at around 6:40. The Mendoza family told us that he was riding his bicycle to his job site as a watchman as he does every day. They tell us that he looks after vessels belonging to Lamanai Eco-Tours, which is located right at the foot of the toll bridge.

He arrived at the Guinea Grass junction, and here is where the confusion starts. Police believe that he fell out of the back of a green pickup, and that's how he got hurt. They have reportedly gotten a statement from a witnesses who described the mishap as Mendoza falling out of the truck. His family says that they believe this pickup hit him so hard from behind, and he was flung over the vehicle, landing behind it. That's where they think that this eyewitness is mistaken. They say that they've tracked down his bicycle and the back wheel is damaged, which lends credibility to their suspicion.

Nevertheless, he's hospitalized in a coma at the KHMH with a fractured skull, a broken foot, a broken hand, and 4 broken ribs. The Mendoza family tells us that the doctors are worried that his brain is starting to swell.

Mendoza's son told us that he and his family are asking for the driver of this vehicle to just come forward and explain to them what happened with the patriarch of the family. He said that they don't want to press the police to send the driver of the vehicle to jail, and that they can understand if the driver is worried that he or she could face criminal consequences for the accident. They just want to be clear as to what happened.
