Cuba and Belize Talk Fisheries
posted (April 24, 2018)
Today the Cuban and Belizean authorities came together for an exchange. It was not an exchange of money or a scholarship from the Cubans instead it was an exchange of information. The Fisheries department from Belize and Cuba met today to exchange knowledge on different aspects of our similar marine lives and the threats to it. We found out more this morning from the experts.

Daniel Whittle, Senior Director- Cuba Oceans Program
"My organization EDF works to hand overfishing and preserve Marine Ecosystems that fish depend upon. Belize and Cuba are two of the most important places in the Caribbean in terms of biodiversity fisheries. For environmental reasons and benefits but also for socio-economic benefits for the people. Fishing communities in Belize depend upon healthy marine resources and likewise in Cuba and so we are here to share lessons, get together and to see what works and does not work."

"It is critically important for both countries. Cuba has a lot to learn from Belize and Belize has a lot to learn from Cuba. Now is the time to get together. There are so many challenges with climate change, illegal fishing, and with pollution so the question is what are the new tools for addressing those environmental problems. We have leaders in both countries so there is really mutual benefits in working together."

Lisette Perez, Cuban Ambassador to Belize
"Today we resume the cooperation in fisheries that is why it is very exciting. Cuba and Belize share a lot of common things in this area. We share the Caribbean Sea. We have the similarities and the same challenge in the area of fisheries and in the area of the maritime spaces that we can share in our common area with Belize. We are neighbour we have a strong commitment in Cuba's relation with CARICOM members and in the Caribbean context association to improve the relation and conservation of the Caribbean Sea."

The Cuban team will be traveling to the districts to meet with others and continue the exchange.
