Family Says Loved One Held For More Than 48
posted (April 24, 2018)
Earlier today we told you about the West Canal man charged for the murder of Albert Johnson on Saturday night in Belize City.

Others are detained pending charges - but this evening, the sister of one of the detained came to our newsroom to say her brother has been detained too long without a charge. She asked to appear off camera:

Voice of: Sister of one of the detainee
"He was detained Saturday night at the Queen Street police station. When we went back there they told us that he wasn't there, so they sent us to Raccoon Street. We went to Raccoon Street, he wasn't there. No one told us that he was in Ladyville until Sunday Evening we heard that he was at Ladyville. When we arrived there we asked if we could at least see him, my mom asked to know his condition and if they hurt him. We couldn't see him up there, so they brought him down back and had us on a run-around because we arrived at Raccoon Street [police station] and they told us he wasn't there. His 48 is already up, my mom went there today thinking that it would come out because he's not charged. The person already got charged for what they have him detained for. When I came home, I asked my mom where it was and she told me it's still at the station, so I want to know what's happening. I asked if he got charged and she told me no, that's what brings me up here because I want know why they have him charged and the next thing is that they have him charged just pending investigation. They aren't telling us why or why they have him so long. All they're saying is that they have him pending investigation and the 48 is already up so I just want to know why he isn't released from Raccoon Street [police station] as yet."

"You don't believe he has any connection at all with this murder?"

Voice of: Sister of one of the detainee
"I spoke to several police, CIB investigators, sergeant, patrols and they told me if I didn't see the camera, I would not have come up here or swear for him. I was at home when this happened. I want to know if he is okay, if not let him go for us to take care of him."

We'll keep following the story.
