A Metamorphosis For At-Risk Males, Ages 10 - 14

Our next story is about a programme called "Metamorphosis - Building Resiliency in High Risk Male Children." It is designed by Restore Belize - and currently targeting 44 primary school boys between the ages of 10 and 14.

The idea is to use a number of services to steer these high risk boys away from dropping out of school and joining gangs. They are currently in their third cohort - and - at a media breakfast this morning - Director Mary Vasquez explained how they gauge success:

Today, the media heard from social workers involve din the programme. They navigate the dense web of social ills, from poverty, to violence, to social ills that ensnare many of the boys in the program. But while most of the problems are visible in the child's social ecology, the most malignant ones can't be seen from the surface. Vasquez explained:

As we noted there are 44 boys in this third cohort, and there were 24 in each of the previous cohorts. The program started in 2012, and the program is funded by UNICEF:
