CIVIC’s Grand Opening
posted (April 30, 2018)
It's finally here: tonight the Civic Center will be christened in the first real, full scale basketball game at the most expensive public structure ever built in Belize.

So while many Belizeans should throng to the Civic Center to see the NEBL's two city Basketball teams, the Defenders and the Hurricanes battle it out, let's face it: the main attraction tonight is the venue.

The state of the art area is the first of its kind in Belize and is set to deliver a fun and unique experience for those attending. We found out more:

Lucinda Castillo, Administrative Manager- Apex Event Services Belize
"The management staff has been here seven days a week almost 16 to 18 hour day. We leave here eleven at night trying to make sure it is already and prepared for tonight. There has been a lot of negotiation from people that want to do our concession stands. We have four main concession stands that will be open tonight with food. We have five bars that will be open. We have got Bowen and Bowen in here tonight. We have got Travellers in here tonight. We have gotten a lot of interest from the business community so it has been really negotiating to make sure we have something for everyone that will be in here. Sales have been going steadily since we opened on Wednesday and today it has been a mad rush. Belizean style everyone has been coming in today for their tickets so we are pretty much almost getting sold out. We only have general admission right now and those are going pretty fast as well."

"We have been dealing with lighting, sound, working with our entertainment, we are going to be giving a halftime show tonight, we have brought the Defenders and Hurricanes to practice in here as well. It has been a very busy two to three weeks here so we are happy it his coming to the culmination as well. We are excited to see what the Belizean public will think and what the experience will be like for them so we are looking forward to feedback from them afterwards, the good and the bad constructive criticism is always welcomed because that is the only way we will know how to do better."

The game begins at 8:45 pm. Limited General Admission tickets are still available for purchase at the CIvics ticket booth.

An Inspired Donation

See and Taste Belize Incorporated is an NGO founded by the Consulate of Belize in Florida. The goal of the NGO is to hold events that can raise money and donate to Belizean companies in need. For the past two years, the NGO has held the SEE and TASTE Belize festival giving foreigners in Florida the chance to donate and experience some of what the country has to offer.

Last year's festival raised a total of $160,000 and today the money was donated to the Inspiration Center. We stopped by and found out more about NGO and the large donation.

Janine Sylvestre Vega, Hon. Consul General of Belize In Florida/Founder of "See and Taste Belize Incorporated"
"The whole concept of See and Taste Belize is I was thinking of how we could reach out to the diaspora in the United States while also giving back to the children of Belize so the whole concept of See and Taste really came into fruition when I formed the GO. The purpose was to get closer to the diaspora and give them an opportunity to come and visit Belize even if it was just for a day and enjoy all the wonderful things we all miss about Belize when we are away the food, the music the friends, just the day of enjoyment and also give foreigners a chance to learn about Belize by exposing them to the beauty of our country, and thirdly to give back to the children of Belize."

"We specifically focus on the Inspiration Center the first year the fund was raised for the pediatric intensive care unit which as you know was being built at the time and was very much needed because mothers before that had to travel outside the country to get urgent care for their babies. Obviously, the inspiration centre is also like any other in the country that cares for children with disabilities. Next year we will choose another cause that is near and dear to our hearts."

The NGO is working on planning another festival for next year.

Labour Day, the Meaning Behind The Holiday

Tomorrow we will all enjoy a day off from work and school but what does Labour day really mean? Well, it's celebrating workers, but also workers unions and their rights.

Today the Public Service Union of Belize sent out a release praising workers saying, quote,"We can all be proud of what we have accomplished over the years both individually and collectively. But when people stand together they can make a change. The strength that comes from solidarity is a force that can make a real difference in workers lives. Labor standards, minimum wages, employee rights, have been hard fought by members of labor unions and are just some of the victories which have been won over time."

They also stressed the importance of Unions - saying, quote: "Labor Unions also a make difference in our communities and have social value."
