Remembering Goldson, The Journalist
posted (May 2, 2018)
Tomorrow is being observed as "World Press Freedom Day" - all around the world. In Belize, it will be observed at The Goldson House in Belmopan with a presentation called 'Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law'. It's appropriate since Goldson started out in public life as a journalist at the Belize billboard - and he was made - basically - a political prisoner of the colonial government when they jailed him for sedition based on what he had written.

The free and independent press has come a long way since then, and Coordinator Kendra Griffith gave us the historical perspective:..

Kendra Griffith, Coordinator - Golden House
"Was once the home of our national hero Phillip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson and it was renovated by the National Institute for Culture and History under the department for the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) and we have created what is a small museum space which is research center. It basically features the life Phillip Goldson, a bit of the independence movement, some information on Belize/Guatemala claim and what we've done is we want to honor Phillip Goldson and have children and the public at large learn about his contributions to Belize and how his contributions has affected the life that we live today in Belize. For example, this room is the chronology of his timeline. The next room is his as a writer and a journalist, which tomorrow will be doing world press freedom day 2018 under the theme "let journalism live," because he was a journalist and he was recognized regionally and internationally for his work. His work with the Belize Billboard. So what we are trying to do tomorrow is to have students meet with journalists. They will be meeting in the morning session with Miss Adele Ramos at 10am and she will be speaking on topics of the importance of journalism, it effects on society and in the afternoon we will have Mr. Paul Lopez as well and its just like a meet and greet, to inspire students to become journalists themselves and for them to understand the movement of journalism and the movement of journalism in Belize and its effects on our democratic society and it effects on Belize itself."

The day starts at 10:00 AM with a presentation by Adele Ramos. There will also be tours of the Goldson House which opened in 2015.
