Walks Into Police Station, Opens Fire
posted (May 3, 2018)
Just as police were responding to those shootings last night in Belize City, there was another very disturbing one in Burrell Boom Village. A man tried to kill an on-duty police officer inside the Village Police Sub-station. It appeared as though the gunman had no reason to target the officer, other than trying to hurt him or worse.

Daniel Ortiz has that story:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
This police station compound was the scene of a strange but deadly attack on an on-duty police officer. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed.

Last night, at around 8 p.m., Constable Chris Staine was inside the sub-station building. Reports are that he was doing a bit of cleaning, when he spotted a masked man he described as red skinned. That man approached the front door, and immediately opened fire on the officer. Constable Staine took cover behind a desk, grabbed his police-issued shotgun, and he returned fire.

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Eastern Division
"Burrell Boom police reported that, Police Constable Chris Staine was inside of the Burrell Boom station when he observed a male person wearing a mask approaching the front door. The said male person then fired 2 shots at him, luckily he escaped unhurt and as a result the police retrieved his issued shotgun and fired shots at the male person who escaped from the police station compound. Police processed the scene at the station and observed that there were two suspected bullet holes on the window of the police station. So far police are looking for one male person that can assist in this investigation."

Police say that Constable Staine exited the station, and fired 2 more shots at the gunman, but he escaped through this gate. Right now, the cops say that they don't know why Staine was targeted, but they do acknowledge that he being alone posed a serious threat to his life.

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It is something that is not being taken lightly. The police are taking all measures and they have been encouraged that they must be vigilant and that they must be there to protect themselves. Most of the time that these incidents happen is because we know that the officer are by themselves at the station and probably that's the advantage that these criminals are looking for. He was the only person at the station when the incident happened and the person went and fired shots at him."

The cops say that they are looking one person who they believe can assist them in this investigation.
