CWU President Criticizes CITCO Firings Of Union Members
posted (May 9, 2018)
So, while that's the position of the now former City Administrator, there are 5 other employees who are also without a job at this time. 2 out of the 5 are presently members of the Christian Workers Union, and in disciplinary matters such as their termination yesterday, the CWU leadership was to have been notified. That didn't happen, and so they immediately reached out to their President, Evan "Mose" Hyde, and his team for consultation.

It makes for an interesting dynamic that in his capacity as CWU President, HYDE suddenly becomes an adversary of his brother-in-law, Mayor Bernard Wagner - who is married to Hyde's sister.

This morning, he used his WUB Morning Talkshow to make it clear that he stands in defense of his 2 union members in what appears to be an unfair termination.

Here's what he had to say this morning to his viewers and listeners:

Mose Hyde, President - CWU
"While it is that our position is going to send out and in fact the letters as it relates to 2 of our members who were among those terminated yesterday, who we are tasked with representation, Letters have been sent by our secretariat to the city council expressing and listing our concerns as it stands right now based on what has been written in those letters and based on what we have gotten from our members. We cannot sit down and accept that those terminations were fair or just. In my view just looking at where we are. The termination of union members is something that is in our view has to be done through a process. We have a responsibility. We are the bargaining agent for unionize members at the city council and so as is outlined in our collective bargaining agreement. There are certain ways you go about with your disciplinary process, or how whatever you view it as the termination is a disciplinary process, is a disciplinary exercised and in that exercised there is a need for absolute due process and we questioned that due process and especially in the light of the fact that both these workers have received positive appraisal of their work at the city council."

"At no point in time has the union been notified that there issues with 2 of our workers there and 2 of our members. So there is no build up for us to know what grounds and in fact it is not specified in the letters as to what grounds our members have been terminated and so we have responsibility to engage the city council in defence of our members."

Answering our text message request for comment, the President Hyde told us quote, "The union does not believe due process was afforded our members, and it has sent letters to the City Council to express this. The union is requesting an audience for our members to have this matter addressed as soon as possible. The Collective bargaining agreement requires the union to have been notified if our members had violated the terms of their employment . The Secretariat has met with our members, and the proper protocol will be used to defend their rights." End quote.
