Did Alleged Conman Catch The Cops?
posted (May 9, 2018)
He's so clever he even conned the cops!

Last Friday, Luis Velasquez was taken to court after he was nabbed in Maskall Village. He was wanted by the Supreme Court for fraud, in a debt of $40,000 owed to L and R Liquors.

We spoke to one man who says you can add 600 dollars to that:

Voice of: Man who signed up for bartending course
"I contact him through Facebook trying to get certified trained to be a bartender."

Jules Vasquez reporting
This is Luis Velasquez's Facebook page - which looks top notch - he's worked with BTEC, and as the page suggests he even mixed a cocktail for Prince Harry. So our interview subject happily paid:

Voice of: Man who claims he was conned
"We came to an agreement and we met. That same day I paid him $600. You can see the receipt right there, in cash full."

And that is when police showed up.

Voice of: Man who claims he was conned
"During the time we were there he was training me. The cops came."

Reporter
"What did he do when the cops came?"

Voice of: Man who claims he was conned
"He just walked out."

And he never came back. Until police captured him two days later in Maskall. Police had a committal warrant for Velasquez and he went straight to jail. He accused of taking L and R Liquors south for 40 thousand dollars.

And while he's in jail now, 15 days before he was caught he was profiling with the top cop on the Southside.

Voice of: Sr. Supt Howell Gillett, Commander - Region 1
"We at Eastern Division Region 1 are very pleased to be partnering with Mr. Luis Velasquez and Belize Institute of Mixology. This partnership will see some 25 people from our side of Belize City engage in bartending."

Voice of: Luis Velasquez, Belize Mixology
"Thank you very much for having me Mr. Gillett, my name is Luis Velasquez and I am the owner of Belize Mixology or rather Belize Institute of Mixology. I have seen the things that Mr. Gillett has been doing since he arrived in Belize City, Senior Superintendent Mr. Gillett and I have always admired it and wanted to reach out. Finally we are having a meeting."

Maybe he saw that as a way of gaining legitimacy to lure 25 others into paying $600, or a way to get cover - but less than two weeks later, Police had put out an APB for a man who had been mugging for a picture in a commander's office days earlier.

And while the cops may have learned a lesson about being too trustful, so did this guy:

Voice of: Man who claims he was conned
"Very disappointed in it too. I work had for that."

ON Friday, Velasquez was send to prison on the strength of a committal warrant. He appeared in court Monday morning where Justice Sonya Young will be deciding on how and what terms Velasquez will have to pay back the $40,000 he owes to L&R's Liquors.

Velasquez who has been on the run for quite so time.

Velasquez is due back in the Supreme Court of Justice Sonya Young who will be handing down her ruling in respect of his old debt of $40,000.
