Guatemala Says YES to ICJ, Belize says NO to Chiquibul encroachments
posted (May 10, 2018)
Last night we told you about the alarming report from the Friends For Conservation and Development, FCD. They say that on Tuesday a group of rangers on patrol in the Southern Chiquibul, came upon, quote, "a complex array of human activities, including fresh survey lines, and plantations of beans, corn, and bananas. The FCD says that farmers are pushing into Belizean territory because they are emboldened by the "Yes" vote on the ICJ referendum.

The FCD is recommending a increased patrols in the area, and calling on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the OAS to assess the human activities.

Today, the Deputy Prime Minister said he only has the basic details but agreed that Belize must move strongly to quell these incursions:

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"I only listened to a brief review this morning. I don't have the details so I don't feel comfortable enough to comment on something like that but what I can tell you is that while it is that we continue to try and work things out diplomatically something as serious as that, incursions where they are putting up survey pegs and all of that in our territory from my understanding it is, very limited understanding. I reiterate is not in the adjacency zone this is actually in Belizean territory and that kind of thing we ought to dissuade and we have to move strongly against. We have not discussed it as a cabinet or beyond what I have just seen or heard on the news."
