Belize-Guatemala Commission Discuss 13 Bilateral Agreements
posted (May 10, 2018)
And on the formal and orderly side of cross border relations…the Belize-Guatemala Joint Commission met again yesterday, this time in Guatemala City.

The group was re-activated this year to implement the 13 bilateral agreements signed in 2014 on the Placencia Peninsula.

The meeting was headed by the Commissioners of both countries: Ambassadors Alexis Rosado, and Georges De La Roche with a representative of the OAS Secretary General, Manuel Washington Abdala.

The roadmap set up from the last meeting was that there would be increased focus on the initial implementation of 4 out of the 13 Bilateral Agreements. Those include the Movement of Students, the Protection of the Environment, Tourism, and the Operational Hours of the Terrestrial Entry points between the two countries.

Also at yesterday's meeting, the Commission defined initial mechanisms for the establishment of a High-Level Group of Security Forces between the two countries as a means to strengthening the existing Confidence Building Measures.

The next meeting of the joint commission will take place next month.
