City Council Retains Discounts For Senior Citizens
posted (May 14, 2018)
In his March transition report, the Mayor of Belize City, Bernard Wagner said that property tax discounts had to stop. He said the council was losing too much revenue because of it.

Well, turns out a lot of those discounts are for senior citizens - who get 25% off. So, after coming off as uncaring about the elderly, the council has had to tone down the rhetoric.

A release today says, quote, "elderly Belizeans will be able to continue making their property tax payments without facing economic ruin. The property tax discounts of 25% to senior citizens of this city will not be interrupted. It shall remain in full effect. It only applies to the property where they reside and does not include vacant lots."

We expect that other discounts for those who pay early or in advance will not be allowed to continue, however.
