Danny Mason Will Stand Trial For Kidnapping
posted (May 15, 2018)
Last year, accused murderer William Danny Mason was committed to the Supreme Court to stand trial along with his co-accused for the beheading murder of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas. Today, he got more bad news when Senior Magistrate Merlene Moody ruled that he will stand trial for the charge of kidnapping.

This kidnapping was alleged to have occurred weeks before Belmopan police found Pastor Lucas' decapitated head in the back of Mason's vehicle.

Mennonite Lloyd Friesen reported to police that he got into a business arrangement with Mason, where Mason would import three hundred thousand dollars' worth of corn through Argentina. Friesen told police that he fronted the money, but the shipment never materialized. He then demanded that Mason return his money, and kept pressing for it.

Mason eventually invited the businessman to his house for a meeting. When Friesen and his wife showed up, they were allegedly held by armed men, and their heads were covered with hoods. They were taken to Mason's ranch, where Mason allegedly told them that if they went to the police, he would know because he had deep connections inside the department. He then allegedly told the Friesen couple that instead of getting back their money, Lloyd Friesen would have to pay him $2,500 weekly. He told police that he did pay the money for a few weeks, and then fled the country.

The preliminary inquiry for Mason and his employees, Ashton Vanegas, brothers Keiron and Terrence Fernandez, and Ernest Henry Castillo, started on April 23 before Senior Magistrate Merlene Moody. The entire evidence bundle against them were produced for the Magistrate to examine, and on that date, their attorney, Herbert Panton, made lengthy submissions as to why these kidnapping charges should be thrown out. He complained about conflicting witness statements, and conflicting identifications, which, from his perspective, violated the constitutional rights of the accused.

In her ruling today, Magistrate Moody found that the evidence is enough for the case to be tried in the Supreme Court. With that, she committed Mason and his co-accused to stand trial in the next sitting of the Belmopan Supreme Court, which is scheduled to commence in June.
