Work Resumes, Slowly On Multi Purpose Building
posted (May 15, 2018)
Last night we told you about the woes at the multi-purpose building on Lake I Boulevard. The 4.46 million dollar project is two years behind schedule - and the contractor has chronic problems paying suppliers and employees.

That;S why when we went there yesterday, the 25 man work crew had basically gone on strike because they weren't paid on Friday - and neither were they paid yesterday.

But today when we went there we saw some activity - though the work crew still hadn't returned. The supervisor told us more - and did his best to put a happy spin on a less than ideal situation:..

Kareem Myvett - Site Supervisor
"Like I told you yesterday Jules, it was just a rumor that we weren't being paid so I don't think that anyone will be here with heavy machinery working if there was no money around. I mean I would like to apologize that to the Belizean public on behalf of my boss Wood, Brick and Stone, the company. Jules, we are here to see this contract through and that's what's going to happen, there is no 2 ways about that."

"What is the situation with the workers?"

Kareem Myvett - Site Supervisor
"The situation with the workers is that some of our guys have their own jobs to do so they are communicating with us that they are going to work because they have been paid today so they worked at some other job site for 2 days, so that fact that they are not here today. We don't really have any control over that but tomorrow they are definitely going to be here. So, we are going to be at 100 percent operating speed tomorrow."

Reporter
"So, you told me yesterday until be completed in 3 months. You are confident at that?"

Kareem Myvett - Site Supervisor
"I'm confident, I'm fully confident that we are going to be done in 3 months because the building inside is pretty much finished and we don't have a lot to do outside."

Reporter
"Now you realize that's like 2 years late, because it said September 2016."

Kareem Myvett - Site Supervisor
"You are right we are well behind but what needs to be said is that while I wasn't working here there was a time that this place had stopped for several months and that's part of the reason that we are so much behind schedule but like I said Jules, we are here to finish this and we are going to see it through."

The contractor is a company out of Corozal named Wood, Brick and Stone Company Limited.
