Belize & Cuba, Comrades
posted (May 16, 2018)
Today the Image Factory in Belize City hosted the fifth National Solidarity Encounter between Belize and Cuba. The audience was made up of people young and old from across the country that wanted show their respect and support for Cuba. We stopped by this morning and found out that it was more than just a solidarity declaration, it was also an art show honouring Cuba.

Yasser Musa, SJC Teacher/Artist
"We developed a simple declaration pledging our continued support to the people of Cuba in our Quest I believe to expand and make more dynamic the solidarity efforts. What do I mean by Solidarity? The basic idea is to show friendship by building human capacity. This is an idea that Fidel Castro developed, his revolution and developed Cuba using the idea of building people. Building their capacity whether it is thru doctors, better literacy, and it has been transferred to Belize. I don't think that the idea is just for the transfer to just stay in Belize. The idea is for we Belizeans to take the responsibility of building our own human capacity. I think that was a powerful moment today."

"There is a whole wall of art influenced by a Cuban Artist named Falco. Falco is a graphic designer an amazing graphic designer and in my art class at school I always use works of other artists to spark a thought in my students and the reason I used him as an example is that he makes very simple graphic designs and his designs speak to issues in the world today so our students looked at his work, discussed, analyzed, and interpreted his work so that is part of the exhibit. Another part is an E-book that I launched today called 61 hours in Havana. It is a compilation of a blog/poetry book/photography book about my impression of the May 1st, 2018 parade that saw over 1 million people in Havana marching. It was a powerful thing and I decided to make a book. We had a cultural/educational component to our solidarity today."

Many Cuban representatives were there including the Cuban Ambassador to Belize Lisette Perez.
