Paying Tribute To Teachers
posted (May 18, 2018)
Today, teachers from all across Belize converged on the Civic Center for a mass celebration of teachers day.

For weeks, the status of the event was unclear because the BNTU was not able to pay their share towards the event but - in the end, it all worked out, with good old GOB footing the bill.

Sahar Vasquez stopped in got the vibe from some very happy teachers.

Sahar Vasquez reporting
A few weeks ago chances of a teachers' day celebration seemed like a pipe dream, but today the spirit of celebration was genuine as Education Minister Patrick Faber Stood on the podium and chanted:

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
"There is nobody that can inspire us like great teachers can."

All differences were put aside for the sake of the 2,000 plus teachers that flooded the Civic Centre today. They came from all corners of Belize to let loose and rejoice in the one day dedicated to them.

Teachers sacrifice more than anyone may ever know, so a day of appreciation is a small reward for their labours and their inspiration.

Hon. Elena Smith, National President BNTU
"For us, it is very important our teachers do work hard and I think we realize how hard and how much our teachers give up. They give up themselves, their homes, sometimes they neglect their own families for their students and so today I don't think that it should be just a day. You know we have education showcase. For me, it is not enough to say or give enough thanks to our teachers and all that we do but we do appreciate having a day that we can do that and we hope."

And, well, it is safe to say that today many teachers felt that all their hard work and dedication to their craft was well recognized by the gathering and the organizers.

Helen Melendez, Holy Cross Anglican School- San Pedro
"It feels good to be honoured by the Ministry of Education. As teachers, we do make a difference and our hard work is hardly recognized on most occasions right. I can't say much but I am really thankful and really appreciate what is being done for all teachers."

Jorge Ayala, Jose Succotz RC School
"I feel good. I came all the way from the west and the first time I am at the civic but yes it is good to honour teachers because as teachers we are fathers, mothers, doctors, referees, and so much more so I do feel honoured."

Gwendolyn Monomoy, A principal of Corozal Methodist School
"I am very happy because as teachers we work very hard so it is always good to feel and know that you are being honoured by your government and management."

Vanisha Rayburn, Saint Agnes Anglican Primary School
"I think it is impressive as teachers we celebrate ourselves every day with the hard work we have to do and today was just a day to reflect on the great job we do as teachers."

One day to celebrate teachers hardly feels adequate, but for them, one day of being honoured and acknowledged by a nation is enough to re-gather and refuel for another year of teaching.
