Man Likely Killed And Then Home Burnt Down in Hopkins
posted (May 22, 2018)
There's another traumatic death over the weekend which happened in Hopkins Village - and this one also looks like murder - but police can't say for sure yet.

This community on the coast of the Stann Creek District is known for its natural beauty and for it's easygoing way of life, but, early on Sunday morning, that peace was disturbed by a three building fire, followed by the discovery of charred human remains.

Police say that they found a 2-storey house completely destroyed, and it's tenant, George Magaña, missing.

At this time, there are those in the village who suspect foul play and arson, but the authorities have only been able to determine that the house intentionally set ablaze by someone. We spoke with both police and the Fire Department about the case, and here now is what the cops had to say:

ACP Joseph Myvette- Head of NCIB
"On Sunday the 20th of May, shortly after 4:20 am police responded to reports of a fire in Hopkins village. Upon police arrival, they saw a wooden building engulfed in flames. The building was an elevated building that housed four apartments. The fire department arrived and attempted to extinguish the fire, which was eventually extinguished however, the building was completely destroyed by fire. While the scene was buying inspected, human remains were found on the scene. Police investigation into this matter had revealed that several persons were renting the different apartments and all were accounted for, with the exception of one George Magana. Police have recorded several statements; the remains were removed and taken to the Southern Regional Hospital where it awaits a post-mortem examination."
