"The Dangriga branch of the National Fire Service received and responded to structural fire in the village of Hopkins, Stann Creek District. On arrival on the scene 2 of 3 structures was seen engulf with flames. All 3 structures were on the same property. The structure at the farthest point from the first 2 that was on fire was undamaged by the fire. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire originated in the 2nd structure, that 2nd is a 20 by 30 wooden structure elevated approximately 4 feet off ground approximately 4 feet from the front structure. During the mop-up phase of fire extinguishing, the lifeless body of an unidentified person was also discovered. The cause of the fire is classified as incendiary. Person or persons responsible are unknown at this time."

Best guesses are that Magana was killed inside the house, and then the house was set on fire to cover the killers' tracks. His body is reported to have had a gash to his head.
