Police Move From Murder Scene to Community Meet and Greet
posted (May 23, 2018)

At the top of the news, we told you about the murder of Carlton Moreira near to the Mayflower Street in the Ghost Town gang's territory.

Well, less than 2 hours after that, when the cops were still mobilizing to keep law and order in that area, they still had to go out on meet and greet sessions on George Street and surrounding areas. Two of the weekend murders happened in what is considered to be in or near to George Street territory, and so police were out assuring the residents of this area, that they will attempt to prevent street tensions from escalating further.

We met the officer commanding Police Precinct 2 meeting with the community, and we asked how it was going. Here's what he had to say:

ASP John Moreira - OC, Belize Precinct 2
"Well, what happened recently we have seen an increased spike of crime in the area hence the reason we decided we will do meet and great in this area today; meeting members of the public, residence and finding out from the actually some of their concerns and how best we can assist them in the fight against crime."

Daniel Ortiz
"You had an opportunity to speak to residence and what are they saying about the level of criminal activity in the area?"

ASP John Moreira
"Well, in particular on this Amara Avenue we have spoken to different persons and they are saying that they feel safe in this area, this part of town except for neighboring area streets. So they feel very safe and they are happy with our presence in this area at this time."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir we understand that you all intend to visit George Street as well which is historically a location which is anti-police. How do you approach them to try to open conversation and dialogue?"

ASP John Moreira
"Well, as you know, we know that George Street has always been a problem, however we need to go in there and let people know that the police is here to help them and they as well need to help us to make their area safe."

Reporter
"In terms of the business community, what are business owners in this precinct sharing with you guys about the safety of their establishment and what have you?"

ASP John Moreira
"Well, the business community are expressing that they need to see more police presence, however I can safely say that there is police presence but we need to do more. They have also expressed that they will assist especially with resources - be donations, some form of resources."
