Clean Sweep In Barbados Vaults First Female PM to Power
posted (May 25, 2018)
For the first time in its history, Barbados has a woman Prime Minister. Mia Mottley was sworn in today after she led her party, the BLP to the most one sided victory in the history of Barbadian politics. How one sided, you ask? Well, how about a clean sweep of all 30 seats? That's right, Mottley's party won every single seat, leaving the outgoing DLP administration with no seats in the Barbadian Parliament. The 52 year old politician - who even had an endorsement from Barbadian pop queen, Rihanna - was sworn in today and is expected to name a Cabinet by Monday. There's no clarity yet on how her government will introduce an opposing voice in the Barbados National Assembly - since no opposition was elected. She takes over a country with serious economic problems, and a sewage disposal problem that is crippling its tourism sector.
