Unesco Looking for Education Answers
posted (May 29, 2018)
For the last two days, education specialists from UNESCO and the technocrats of the Ministry of education have been in a workshop to improve Belize Education system.

They're trying to Integrate Education for Sustainable Development into the country's education policies.

As we all know, the country's education system is far from perfect, and so, to try and improve on its infrastructure, the Ministry invited the UNESCO specialists to examine it and implement elements of Education for Sustainable development in areas where it can actually benefit.

We stopped by to speak with the participants:

Astrid Hollander, Representative - UNESCO San Jose
"This workshop is about education for sustainable development, especially on how to integrate education for sustainable development into education policies with the focus on teacher training, curriculum development and student assessment and running outcomes."

"In order to implement education for sustainable development we need to change also the way we are educating right now. We need an education that transformative and we need to maybe move away from a more traditional education with focus on transition of knowledge. We need to have an education that is centered on the learner and the learner needs and the community needs and we need to implement different ways of teaching and learning. We need to include new topics into the curriculum and we need to rethink the kind of competencies that we want to foster. We want to foster something like critical thinking, the imagining of possible, probable and desirable future and how we would get there. Competencies for collaboration with others. Competencies for questioning one's own values and understanding the perspective of others as an example."

Deborah Domingo, CEO - Ministry of Education
"When we look at our own national development plan: Horizon 2030, education underpins all the goals and objectives. The same can be said of the sustainable development goals. In fact I don't think there is any goal that can be accomplished without having quality education as a driver, a facilitating condition for the accomplishment of those. So it is important for the education sector to have that as one of the priorities that we are planning for achievement."
