Human Smuggling: 17 Central Americans Caught

Today, 12 Central American illegal immigrants appeared in San Ignacio Magistrate's Court charged for illegal entry.

It's a routine charge, but not a routine case after police caught 19 persons total - 12 adults and 7 children - coming across the Western border illegally on Sunday night. The police caught them at a checkpoint on the Bullett Tree Road - coming down from Calla Creek - which borders Guatemala.

Today in court, the man driving the van Richard Mcdougal pleaded guilty to 19 counts of facilitating them by aiding in the commission of an offense. He was fined one thousand dollars for each person, leaving him with a hefty fine of 19 thousand dollars. He paid three thousand and was given until 31st. August to pay the balance.

The 12 adults were also fined a thousand each and were went to jail, while their embassies have been contacted. Their children are in the care of social services.

They hoped to go from west to the northern border and told authorities that their destination was Houston and New York.

At the time of the initial arrest, San Ignacio police put the 5, 7 and 11 year olds in the jail cell with the adults.
